The field of Cyber Security is experiencing a great deal of expansion nowadays due to exponential growth in the volume and sophistication of cyber attacks. Companies and organizations, especially those that are tasked with safeguarding information relating to national security, health, or financial records, need to take steps to protect their sensitive business and personnel information and this has contributed to increasing demand for cyber security experts. In response to the demand, universities are striving to create degree programs from within their existing computer science, business and engineering departments. New cyber security courses are being developed by academics in response to real world needs both in the public and private sectors.
Cyber Security Science as a course is an evolving discipline that provides graduates with broad and balanced foundational knowledge of cyber security. The program involves the study of strategy, policy and standards regarding the security of operations in cyberspace, and encompassing the full range of threat reduction, vulnerability reduction, deterrence, international engagement, incident response, resiliency, recovery policies and activities. This course, however offers a holistic approach to Cyber Security Science education by affording students the opportunity to take courses in Cyber Security Field to meet the present-day demand in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This programme aims to build capacity and develop human capital in the field of cyber security, and to safeguard business transactions as well as corporate assets nationally and globally. In other words, the cyber security programme is to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to protect people, computers, networks, programs, data and other critical infrastructure from attack, damage or unauthorized access. As a discipline, the field of cyber security requires authentic knowledge to explore and reason about the “how and why” we build or deploy security controls.
This new degree will help prepare students for positions with titles such as Cyber Security Officer, Security Technician, Security Analyst, Security Administrator and Security Auditor. They can take up these positions in Information Technology firms, Telecommunication Industries, Military and Paramilitary organizations, Government, Banking Industries, Security Agencies and many other organizations.
